Shout Out – Noodles & Company

Noodles & Company is a chain that is working to start transitioning to get more local and fresh ingredients. For now we would like to give them our very first shout out because of their innovative and creative allergen friendly menu, and the small steps that they are making to be more eco-friendly and have higher quality ingredients!

I Scream Cakes

IMG_2449After seeing a booth from I Scream Cakes at the Saint Louis Fair Festival this past summer and trying a delicious vegan, gluten free, AND organic ice cream cone, I have been dying to visit their store and see what they have to offer! We were so excited to discover this local ice cream shop and enjoyed tasting their delicious treats! It was a fun end to a day of eating and walking around the Botanical Gardens!

Big Sky Cafe

Miriam and I visited this local eatery on a Sunday AM when we were in the Webster Groves area. This restaurant focuses on local ingredients and seems to do a lot for the community in terms of fund raisers and their community involvement.  If in the area, we would recommend this restaurant because of these good practice attempts, along with the tasty food. Lulu’s Local Eatery

photo 2 (6)We’ve heard about Lulu’s Local Eatery’s food truck being at some local events and have been meaning to try it for a couple years now! We only haven’t because it is a bit of a drive for us, but their recently opened store front is conveniently located only a couple of minutes from The Botanical Gardens, so we spent a nice day walking around at the gardens and trying some new food! It was the day after Thanksgiving so although we were stuffed we managed to eat at three different places! We were pleased by their use of many local and organic ingredients, and the variety of menu options including gluten free and vegetarian! We will definitely be back soon to try everything that we didn’t get this time around! (Miriam)

Cafe Osage

060We tried this urban Saint Louis Restaurant on a Sunday for a late brunch, enjoying eggs served baked and over hard. Their use of local, farm raised chicken eggs and produce was impressive. We enjoyed getting a glimpse of one of their farms and green houses across from the restaurant, as well as viewing their garden supplies, produce and plants in their adjacent store. It was a restaurant we had long wanted to check out so enjoyed the adventure of trying a place clearly devoted to growing and using their own local produce.

Foundation Grounds

015

I had an unexpected day off school, so we ventured to Maplewood to finally explore this restaurant which we had read about. It’s a bummer that most of the restaurants on our list of places to try are so far away, but this one was a little big closer than some of the others. What a great discovery for us! This establishment is really trying to obtain the finest ingredients and their menu was fantastic. This is without a doubt, one of our new favorites! (which we say after basically every restaurant we eat at, but we mean it this time!) (Miriam)

OR Juice and Smoothie

Or Juice and Smoothie is a great place to stop for an organic juice or smoothie, or quick high quality salad or snack. The majority of ingredients are organic and the owners seem to be aware of health foods, carrying several high quality supplements and food supplies in their store.

Frida’s Deli

photo 3 (5)
We stopped by for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. This local eatery has recently expanded to provide some nice seating for guests. Their first expansion was in December 2013 and their 2nd was this past summer, 2014. The place was bustling, and the food was quite good. This is an all vegetarian restaurant and they had several gluten free and vegan items which we were thrilled about. This restaurant was definitely another winner and we will be back again!

The Hot Pot

Hot Pot outside
After running some errands including a nice stop at the Creve Coeur Farmer’s Market, we had some time to kill, so we thought what better thing to do than try out another local restaurant! We discovered Hot Pot in an online search to find good quality restaurants around us. Their restaurant believes in whole foods and follows the Paleo diet, which is one that I have tried to follow in the past. Their menu is designed for you to make your own dishes with the foods that you love, using fresh and local ingredients. (Miriam)

YaYa’s Euro Bistro

October 2014 photos 133

We have been meaning to go to YaYa’s for months now because we have heard so many raving reviews about their delicious and high quality food. My dad was out of town for the week so we took advantage of having a night with just the two of us. We enjoyed our relaxing date night out and got to spend time chatting with the manager and learning all about the restaurant and their mission. (Miriam)
