Rooster

roost5Rooster is one of the many local St. Louis restaurants owned by David Bailey as part of all six of the Baileys’ sister restaurants.  We discovered this restaurant on a hunt for gluten free crepes and were pleased with Rooster’s food as well as their environmental practices.  This trendy café was very busy on the Sunday afternoon when we went and it was clear that many locals enjoyed the delicious brunch menu.  We are definitely looking forward to dining at the rest of the Bailey restaurants and hope they are just as enjoyable!

Overall Rating

Food

Rooster’s has a weekend, weekday, and drink menu.  While they only serve brunch on the weekends, they have addition lunch options during the week.  The lunch menu consists of soups, salads, and sandwiches and the brunch menu sticks to mostly crepes and eggs, with a couple pancake, meat, and sandwich options as well.

They also have a nice range of drinks on their separate drink menu with coffee , organic hot tea, juice, soda, and alcoholic beverages.  The alcoholic drinks range from bloody marys and mimosas to local drafted beers.

One thing that was really nice was that at no additional charge, any crepe can be made gluten free and vegan and any crepe can also be turned into an omelet for those wanting a little extra protein!

Overall, their menu is very vegetarian and gluten free friendly! On their menu they have a small marking to point out the vegetarian options as well as a star to point out the house and customer favorites! We will definitely be back to try out more of their delicious crepes and more!

Quality

Rooster’s, like many of the Baileys’ Restaurants, is very committed to having high quality food that is fresh and local whenever possible. Their logo “eat local,” is all over the restaurant and on all of the employees shirts as well!

They use local produce when possible and partake in very eco-friendly practices including compost and recycling.  The salmon they serve is wild caught Alaskan, which is always preferred over farmed salmon.  The eggs are also cage and antibiotic free.

They have a water filtration system that filters out fluoride which is very impressive, because we have found that very few restaurants have this high quality kind of filtration.

In their gluten free crepes they use the high quality flour brand, Bob’s Red Mill. This flour is made up of a mix of garbanzo bean flour, potato starch, tapioca flour, and white sorghum flour.  We use this in our baking at home, and although it is not organic, we were pleased to see that they didn’t use the common genetically modified corn starch flour.

One thing we unfortunately had to try to block out while we were enjoying our meal was that they do not use the best oil in their cooking.  They use soybean oil which is most likely genetically modified and is always highly processed.

It is hard for restaurants to be perfect with their ingredients, and although Rooster’s wasn’t perfect either, their effort in using more local and natural ingredients is still very commendable! We were glad to see the effort put into the quality of most of their items and definitely did appreciate their gluten free crepes, filtered water, wild caught salmon and eggs from happy chickens!

Roosters also can proudly state that at this location on South Grand, where we have dined, they have earned 5 out of 5 stars from the Green Dining Alliance for their commitment to sustainable practices!

Atmosphere

As stated earlier, the restaurant is very trendy and has modern and simple décor. There are many individual tables, but also long connected tables as they have in Europe where they can easily seat many parties next to each other, as well as larger parties. The rooms were all filled with tables which made the wait shorter, but the restaurant a bit loud. We were very happy when we were seated at a private table, because that seemed to be a little more comfortable and quiet. There were nice flowers in the center of the table and they leave you with a bottle of water and nice glasses with the logos of  their sister restaurants on it. roost3roost2

Service

Our waitress was absolutely delightful and did a great job answering all of our questions.  It was crowded but we only had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated and the waitress visited us immediately.  The food came out in a timely manner and all of our food requests were accurately met.  They use an electronic device to send the order to the kitchen and she read back our order before sending it in to make sure it was all correct.  She was also very interested in learning about all that we have discovered regarding healthy eating and resources for food!

Price $$

The food was reasonably priced, ranging from the $6 to $12 depending on what you get. The portions were a good size for one person, but not so big that they left you feeling completely stuffed.

Location

Roosters has two locations and we visited the restaurant on South Grand Blvd near Tower Grove Park. South Grand has many other restaurants near by and is a great place to find a fun restaurant to eat at! Their newer location is located downtown in South City and has more restricted hours.

South Grand Address: 3150 South Grand

Downtown Address: 1104 Locust Street
